Round dies / Hexagon die nuts

... for cutting precise external threads

Here you will find the right tools for cutting external threads on shafts or bolts for a wide range of materials, thread types and applications.

Round dies made of HSS + HSSE

HSS dies are suitable for general use and for easy-to-machine materials with a tensile strength of up to 800 N/mm². The HSSE versions feature a gun nose and are used for threading difficult-to-machine materials.

HSS Hexagon die nuts

The die nuts are particularly suitable for re-cutting and repairing damaged threads, as well as for hand-cutting threads in hard-to-reach places.

⚠️ The table below will help you make an initial selection. Here you will also find further information and recommendations for use to help you choose the right die for your thread cutting.

Recommended use for dies and die nuts

Every metal or material has its own specific physical and chemical properties. These differences arise, for example, from the alloy, tensile strength, ductility, density or hardness of the material to be machined. These properties must be taken into account when selecting the threading die.

VÖLKEL HSSE Dies, steam tempered

In addition to the high-quality HSSE base material and the gun nose, these dies are also lapped and steam tempered. During the steam tempering process, a special heat treatment creates a layer of iron oxide on the surface of the cutting edges.

⚠️ Advantages: The iron oxide layer improves the adhesion of coolants and lubricants to the dies, reduces friction and minimises the risk of the lubricating film breaking down. This helps to prevent cold welding, improves the performance of the dies and extends their service life.

Thanks to the steam tempering process, the dies are particularly suitable for threading ductile materials with a tensile strength of up to 1200 N/mm² and stainless steels.

VÖLKEL HSS Dies, lapped

During lapping, the cutting edges of the die are treated with a very fine abrasive or polishing compound. This removes micro-irregularities, burrs and minute imperfections. As a result, the cutting edges become smoother, sharper and more precise.

⚠️ Advantages: Lapped dies offer several key advantages when cutting threads. The reduced surface roughness results in a significantly better cutting profile, producing cleaner and more uniform threads. At the same time, the finely finished cutting edge leads to lower friction, which makes thread cutting noticeably easier. Another advantage is reduced wear, which extends the service life of the dies. Furthermore, the more precise cutting geometry ensures greater dimensional accuracy and a better fit for the threads produced.

Thanks to their lapped finish and gun nose, these VÖLKEL dies are particularly suitable for machining materials that produce short chips, brass and bronze.
