What are HSSE PM Machine taps?

HSSE PM Machine taps are thread cutting tools made from powder-metallurgically produced high-speed steel alloyed with cobalt. The designation HSSE stands for “High-Speed Steel Enhanced.” The elevated cobalt content boosts hot hardness and wear resistance, allowing HSSE taps to retain their cutting edge for longer, even at high temperatures and when machining tough materials.

The term PM (powder metallurgy or powder material) describes the manufacturing process: The steel alloy is atomised in its molten state by atomisation with nitrogen to form very fine powder grains with a diameter of a few thousandths of a millimetre, which are then hot isostatically pressed (HIP). This technique produces a particularly homogeneous and fine-grained carbide distribution, which improves the toughness, wear resistance and heat resistance of the taps. The fine grain structure minimises micro-cracks and cutting edge breakouts, resulting in stable cutting edges, extended service life and high process reliability during thread cutting

VOLKEL HSSE PM-TiN green ring taps are also (conditionally) suitable for thread cutting in unalloyed and alloyed steels with a tensile strength of < 1200 N/mm², rust- and acid-resistant steels (VA-steels) with a tensile strength of < 850 N/mm² and aluminium alloys (Si 0.5-10%).
